Always Remember

This morning, on Facebook, I see a fourteen year old child post a status saying “here we go again w the stupid sept 11 statuses. it was 12 yrs ago, get over it.” This is so incredibly sad to me that I feel the need to blog about it. Of course, this boy was a very young child when the events happened. But what he doesn’t understand is that he lived through history in a unique way. I was too young to understand the gravity of the events at the time, but that day changed the shape of our country. Whether it was a frightened passenger, a survivor trapped under rubble, a first responder, or a spectator across the country we were one nation that day. We shouldn’t have to wait until terror comes to our door steps to unite against something we know is wrong. We shouldn’t have to wait until tragedy to unite. This day is about remembrance, but it is also about togetherness.

As a country, the worst thing we can do is to forget. Remember how you felt that day and remember the victims and heroes of 9/11. Say a thank you to our men and women in uniform. I’ve had the honor of growing up with a police officer as an uncle, practically a second father. I’ve also had the honor of dating my wonderful boyfriend, who happens to be a firefighter/EMT, for two years. One thing I can tell you is that most of our heroes consider what they do to be “just a job.” Tell them thank you anyways. Tell the ones that you love how special they are. I bet a lot of the nieces and girlfriends of the ones who died twelve years ago wished that they would have.

Let us not forget the lives that were tragically taken and sacrificed years ago.
