Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter who was born in 1907. Her work art was primarily self portraits. As a teenager, she was involved in a traffic accident that left her with lifelong health problems. While recovering from the accident, she was isolated from other people.Kahlo said, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.”

Her work is considered  folk art. Kahlo wanted her birth year to coincide with the year of the beginning of the Mexican revolution so that her life would begin with the birth of modern Mexico. Her work is famous in Mexico for being part of the national tradition, and is celebrated by feminists for its appreciation of the female form. Frida died in Mexico at the age of forty seven.
