High school, college & literacy rates

There’s a school district just outside of Detroit called  Highland Park. In that entire district, only 10% of students from third to eighth grade are competent in reading and math. Of course, the statistics only get worse as the students get older. Their junior year, students take Michigan Merit Exam to see if they are ready to go to college. In 2011, 90% of Highland Park students failed the reading portion, 97% failed the math section, and 100% failed the social studies and science portions.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, along with eight students, filed a lawsuit today in state court on behalf of all the students in the district. The lawsuit names the state of Michigan, its agencies charged with overseeing public education and the Highland Park School District for failing to take  adequate steps to guarantee that students are reading at grade level as set forth by state law and Constitution.

You can read the legal complaint here.

I believe that if more students and agencies such as ACLU took a stand nation wide, America would be in a better situation.
