We Are Alabama

Tough times don’t last, but tough people do.

A year ago today, the unthinkable happened here in Alabama. Tornados killed 253 people. They hit Birmingham, Tuscaloosa , Eclectic and many other counties in the state. In Montgomery, we were fortunate.

We waited and waited…hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. And then the worst happened. It’s a strange feeling sitting there waiting for disaster to strike knowing you can’t do a thing to stop it if fate chooses to put you in its path. We lost over 250 people in Alabama that day, and numerous people in other states as well. That doesn’t even take into account those that were injured or that lost their jobs because their place of work was blown away, or of the extensive property damage in general. The state took a beating that day in terms of people, property, jobs and infrastructure. We woke up on April 28th limping and battered, but determined to go on and to rebuild.

Stop today to think about those who were lost and for their family and friends. We’ll be better off on April 28, 2012 than we were on April 28, 2011 and hopefully we’ll be better off still on April 28, 2013. Don’t forget. Lend a hand if you can. Love each other.
